Let’s face it, President Obama has a tough job; what does he make every year? As per Wikipedia he makes $400K a year. Would you believe me if I were to tell you that you could make that money doing (or rather managing) an easy task. By this time you might be probably thinking that the task may be certainly not as easy as it sounds.
What if I tell you the task is of managing four employees who will collect trash and dump it in a dumpster. Now I am sure you are thinking of piles and piles of dirty trash. My friend, believe me I am talking of residential trash that is neatly packed in bags that sits in an assigned trash can. And if you feel that it does not meet the neatness requirements you set, you can simply ignore it.
St. Marin apartment charges us a hefty $21 as a valet trash pickup fee. Let’s find out how much one could earn if he/she were to run the trash pickup company.
Receivable funds
a. Number of units = 600
b. Charge per unit =$21
c. Total receivable fund = a * b = $12600
d. Total receivable funds per year = c * 12 = $151200
Expenses
e. Employee payment per employee/per hour = $8 (well above the federal minimum wages)
f. Number of employees = 4
g. Number of hours to complete 600 units = 4 (We see those guys here until noon sometimes)
h. Total Employee payments per day = e * f * g = 8 * 4 * 4 = 128
i. Employee payments per year = (number of weeks in a year) * (number of pickups per week) * h = 52 * 3 * 128 = 19968
j. Truck rental expense = $19 /day (standard U-Haul rate for small truck)
k. Insurance per day = $5/day (ballpark figure)
l. Fuel per day = $5/day (assuming 2 gallon consumption for our community, again well over actual)
m. Total truck expense per day = j + k + l = $19 + $5 + $5 = $29
n. Total truck expenses per year = (number of weeks in a year) * (number of pickups per week) * m = 52 * 3 * 29 = $4524
o. Total expenses per year = i + n = 19968 + 4524 = $24492
Revenue
p. Gross revenue per year = d – o = $151200 - $24492 = $126708
How many of us make $126K a year working only 12 hours a week?
That's an hourly rate of $203/hour.
If one were to do trash pickup management as their only job or maybe management and driving the trash truck around as their only job, one could make $422360 /per year!
Wait a minute… I just come up with the last figure assuming that this entrepreneur will get full 40 hours of work, with residents from other apartments willing to pay a $21 valet trash pickup fee.
Now the big question is, are residents from other apartments as stupid as St.Marin residents to pay a $21 for valet trash pickup?
